Changes in the 2021 election calendar: First round will be on February 7

In the next few days, CNE will approve the calendar and budget for the elections to elect the new president of Ecuador

The National Electoral Council (CNE) and the Contentious Electoral Tribunal (TCE) held a new meeting this Monday, February 10, 2020 to set the calendar dates for the next presidential elections. The new proposal is that the first round be February 7, 2021.

In this new meeting, the Electoral Function authorities changed election day. Last week they agreed to be Sunday, February 28, 2021.

Now, they advanced the elections for February 7. The argument to fix this new date, explains the CNE, is based on the need to meet the times for the resolution of resources by the ECA.

The registration of applications will be from September 18 to October 7 of this year; while the second round remains for Sunday, April 11, 2021. This was reported by Lucy Pomboza, of Electoral Processes.

This proposed calendar and electoral budget, recommended by the technical teams, will be considered by the CNE Plenary and, once approved, will be effective when published in the Official Gazette.
