The Colombian teachers and university students demand to the Colombian government stop the assassinations of social leaders and safeguard the integrity of teachers, this following threats launched by armed groups throughout the nation.
The list of teachers frightened, displaced and murdered is long. In 2018, 273 cases of threats were reported and in 2019 there were 715 without executives, the Federation reported.
The report “Life for education” that FECODE delivered to the Jurisdiction for Peace (JEP) shows that between 1986 and 2016 at least 6,119 teachers were victims of human rights violations in the context of the armed conflict.
The report shows alarming figures: 3,170 teachers were threatened, 1,549 displaced, 124 suffered arbitrary detentions, 89 suffered harassment, 40 were kidnapped, 22 tortured, seven lived illegal raids, 990 were killed, 78 were disappeared and 49 suffered attacks with or without injuries, between 1986 and 2016.
Nelson Alarcón, president of the Federation, demands an urgent meeting with Duque to assess the situation of teachers who can return to classes after threats from criminal gangs and armed groups.
