The president of the indigenous organization considers that the Government is taking advantage of the crisis to impose measures.
The Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador (Conaie) held the government responsible for the social reaction that may be generated after statements by the energy minister, René Ortiz, regarding the elimination of the fuel subsidy.
In an interview with a media outlet, the president of the indigenous organization, Jaime Vargas, stated that, taking advantage of the confinement due to the health emergency, the bases are organizing themselves because they consider that the Government has shown «disrespect» for the payment of the external debt, as well as the implementation of a political campaign.
He said that strategies are being defined to deal with the situation after quarantine because they are willing to take to the streets.
He warned that «taking advantage of the crisis is intended to take measures that trample rights.»
Meanwhile, the former Minister of Economy, Diego Borja, described as absurd the Government’s approach to eliminate fuel subsidies.
Borja maintained that this decision is to go against the middle class and that at a time when the price of oil is low, like derivatives, there is no point in eliminating the subsidy because it is almost nil.
The former minister indicated that the Executive is taking advantage of this situation to implement its plan to eliminate the subsidy, sale of assets and the incorporation of bills that are in the hands of the Assembly.
For Augusto Tandazo, an expert on oil issues, on the other hand, targeting fuels is a government trap, because now the repercussions would not be seen, but later when the price of crude oil returns to its normal state.
Tandazo said that it seeks to confuse the people, because the price of oil depends on the international market.
He added that if fuels are focused at this time, people will not feel the blow, but later.
