El Universo newspaper fires its workers amid the health crisis

The settlements would begin to be paid from May 4.

Job stability in the country is increasingly difficult, especially in the media. This Tuesday, April 21, it was disseminated through social networks that 150 people will be separated from the newspaper El Universo.

Radio Pichincha Universal learned that the notifications began to circulate since April 20 and that the group of dismissed persons is staff (administrative, operational and journalists) from Guayaquil and Quito.

Some journalists who work in the media preferred not to delve into details, but they did confirm the measure.

Others, on the other hand, were calm because they say they have left the company in good terms, although they do not know what parameters were taken into consideration to be part of the list of those who were not linked.

In the notification, they thanked them for the services provided, but they point out that there was already an unrest prior to the health crisis.

Regarding the liquidations, they indicated that they were promised to pay what is due to them by law and that they will be carried out between May 4 and 15. Although on social networks it became viral that the payment to Emilio Palacios and Gustavo Cortez would reach USD 500 thousand each.

About how many people left their jobs in Quito and Guayaquil, they did not give explanations. What was known is that a small group of workers will continue with their activities for both print and internet, but they will have to adapt to the new technological mechanisms implemented since the pandemic caused by the coronavirus.
