500 of 973 rural schools resume their activities amid the global pandemic.
The President of the Republic, Luis Lacalle Pou, announced that half of rural schools in the sectors where the coronavirus has not arrived will resume activities.
«(They will be the children of) the most remote towns – with less connectivity, where the virus has not arrived -, those students have the possibility of restarting their studies,» said the president.
The Uruguayan educational system has been paralyzed since March 19. The decision to resume educational activities involves close to 4,000 students and 500 teachers attending classrooms.
Rural schools will open 3 days a week and in principle attendance will be voluntary, according to authorities.
On the other hand, unions and teachers in rural schools expressed their concern that there are no conditions to prevent further contagion in the Latin American country.
