These works will also serve to prevent oil spills.
In order to prevent future damage from natural disasters, Petroecuador and the Heavy Crude Oil Pipeline (OCP) announced the construction of pipeline variants.
Petroecuador reported on the construction of a new variant in the San Rafael sector, the border zone of the Napo and Sucumbíos provinces.
The OCP company also takes contingency measures on its main pipeline.
After the collapse that occurred in the sector of the San Rafael waterfall, last February, now a new problem arose due to erosion in the bed of the Quijos river, which caused immediate measures to be taken to prevent transportation from being paralyzed of crude.
Petroecuador technicians and a team of surveyors are working on the design and construction of a new variant in the pipeline of the Trans-Ecuadorian Pipeline System (SOTE) in the San Rafael sector. This pipe will have an extension of 370 meters in length and will be placed 170 meters from the bed of the Quijos river.
With this work, Petroecuador seeks to guarantee the integrity of the SOTE pipes and the Shushufindi-Quito Pipeline and prevent oil spills.
Erosion on the banks of the Quijos River affects the OCP that transports 180,000 barrels of crude oil daily.
The technicians installed three drainage valves, which will allow the crude oil pipeline to be evacuated when necessary.
In parallel, a temporary variant is built in the pipeline of the pipeline. Roberto Grijalva, operations manager of OCP Ecuador, indicated that the company Techint E&C is in charge.
