According to World Bank estimates, between 40 million and 60 million people will fall into extreme poverty in 2020 as a result of COVID-19. Extreme poverty means living on less than $ 1.90 a day, according to the economic agency.
People living on less than $ 3.20 a day could increase up to 23%.
Lastly, the percentage of people living on less than $ 5.50 a day could increase by 0.4 to 1.9 percentage points, to reach 42% or more, an increase of approximately 70 million to 180 million people. .
Poverty reduction will not meet its target by 2030, due to global crises such as COVID-19 and the increasing difficulty of reaching those who still live in conditions of extreme poverty, as they are often found in fragile countries and remote areas.
In the latest World Bank report, it is estimated that two thirds of the extremely poor population will live in fragile and conflict-affected economies until 2030.
The report indicates that this group of people, who live in rural areas, are minors, do not have access to education, and work in the fields.
