It is the third massive protest in the middle of the pandemic
Protests continue in Quito against the approval of the Humanitarian Support Law and the latest economic measures adopted by the National Government in the health emergency caused by COVID-19.
Outside the Caja del Seguro in Quito, unions of educators, student federations, and workers’ unions convened to raise their voices against government policies.
José Villavicencio, leader of the Unitary Front of Workers, said that the Humanitarian Law makes work precarious and asked President Lenín Moreno to issue his total veto to this regulation.
«That repeal the Law and Decree 1053, listen to the proposals of workers because there are alternatives to solve the economic problem, these measures are not correct,» he said.
In protests this June 8, protesters also raise their voices against racism and for the murder of George Floyd, at the hands of a policeman in the United States. They carry a sign with his face and exclaim «I can Breaht», which were Floyd’s last words.
From August 10 avenue, protesters began the mobilization. Since the protests began during the health emergency, attendees wear a mask, others wear suits, and there are people spraying as they move through the streets of Quito.
They claim the budget cut to higher education, unemployment, the acts of corruption registered in the middle of the pandemic and the insufficient response from the National Government. On May 28, a demonstration was already held in more than 15 cities in the country.
In Guayaquil, retirees from the Social Security Institute of the Armed Forces (ISSFA) held sit-ins outside the Guayas Governorate to claim non-payment of May pensions and for non-compliance with the 60% special contribution made by the Government to retirement pensions.
