The United States Department of Justice announced Wednesday that it has expanded the scope of the 18 conspiracy charges brought against WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.

Assange’s lawyer, Barry Pollack, said in a statement that the harassment suffered by his defended by the US Government.
«It represents a serious threat to journalists everywhere and to the public’s right to know» said Pollack.

According to the accusers, the Australian journalist tried to recruit hackers during conferences held in Europe and Asia (specifically the Netherlands and Malaysia), and conspired with members of hacking organizations to obtain classified information from the US Government.
Now he is responsible for conspiring with the leader of LulzSec, a group of hackers, and for requesting that documents and databases from NATO member countries be provided to him.
Prosecutors add that he also released information about a data breach at a consulting firm in the American intelligence community by a hacker affiliated with LulzSec and the group of hackers known as Anonymous.
