Pablo Romero is prosecuted under the legal figure of attempted kidnapping.
The ex-secretary of Intelligence, Pablo Romero, will face next Monday the trial for attempted kidnapping of the political activist Fernando Balda.
The procedure is scheduled for 08:30 in the National Court of Justice and will take place after almost four months after Romero was extradited to Ecuador.
Romero was called to trial along with former President Rafael Correa and former agents Raúl Chicaiza and Diana Falcón, who were sentenced and have already been released.
The trial court is made up of judges Iván León (rapporteur), David Jacho and Dilza Muñoz. Romero is detained in the Pichincha Provisional Detention Center (CDP) and his lawyer Stalin Oviedo requested that he be transferred to prison 4 in northern Quito, but the court did not grant the request because it was not within his jurisdiction.
Judge Daniella Camacho issued the writ of appeal to trial against the four suspects for finding sufficient elements of conviction.
For the trial hearing, the Prosecutor’s Office plans to present experts, witnesses and dozens of documents. The testimonies of Chicaiza and Falcón will be reproduced at the hearing.
Balda suffered an attempted kidnapping while in Colombia. The event was attributed to two former Police Intelligence agents who had traveled to that country, where they followed up and contacted people who meet the objective of bringing the activist who had a pending criminal process back to the country.
In their versions, the former agents indicated that former President Correa was aware of the actions in the so-called Wilson operation.
In addition to this case, the former Secretary of Intelligence has two processes against him: one for embezzlement and for the entry of prohibited articles into the CDP.
