The Chinese coronavirus vaccine will be «a public good with universal access,» announced Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.
China would grant a USD 1 billion loan to countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, so that they can acquire the vaccine against Covid-19 that is being developed in the Asian country, reported the Chinese Minister of Foreign Affairs, Wang Yi, in virtual conference with diplomats from both regions.
During his speech, the foreign minister assured that the Chinese coronavirus vaccine will be «a public good of universal access,» and even more so when the pandemic does not stop in Latin American territory with more than 4 million infections, according to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Relations of Mexico.
The countries of the region that participated in the virtual session were Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, Mexico, Argentina, Barbados, Panama, Peru, Trinidad and Tobago, the Dominican Republic, and Uruguay.
In May, Chinese President Xi Jingping signaled his nation’s commitment to deliver $ 2 billion, within 2 years, with the aim of providing support to countries affected by the pandemic, both economically and socially .
The Covid-19 vaccine, developed in China, is run by the CanSino Biologics biopharmaceutical laboratory and the country’s military research unit.
After submitting the vaccine to various clinical trials, it has been shown to be safe and endowed with inducing immune responses in most volunteers, as evidenced in its phase 2 study in humans.
Called Ad5-nCOV, the vaccine was applied to 508 healthy adults without being exposed to Covid-19, and the researchers found that it generates immune responses of antibodies and T lymphocytes that counteract the virus, as well as not causing severe side effects.
