CNE proposes the reduction of jobs and working hours due to economic crisis

The electoral institution recognizes that it is urgent that the Ministry of Finance allocate the budget for the 2021 elections.

The National Electoral Council (CNE) raises the option of reducing their working hours and also eliminating jobs due to the economic crisis that the country is going through. CNE plans to reduce expenses by about USD 1.5 million while it is in charge of the development of the general elections of 2021.

The Finance Ministry issued regulations for all state entities, urging them to regulate their spending and reduce bureaucracy. Therefore, the CNE analyzes every possibility.

The Council proposes a reduction of USD 92,517 through 14 untimely dismissals. Another measure that is analyzed is the reduction of the working day, until December, from eight to six or seven hours of work, this reduction would save USD 752,584. These measures would start from August 15 until the first days of September.

By October 2019, the CNE had already laid off 574 workers due to the lack of budget to cover the salaries of the last quarter of the year. The counselor, José Cabrera, had already expressed the sensitivity of the institution. Cabrera commented that security companies and the media had asked to terminate the contracts with the institution, since they have not been paid since 2019.
