The Ombudsman’s Office demands immediate payment of the salaries of public sector workers

The Office of the Ombudsman (DPE) presented a protection action in the Northern Judicial Complex of Quito. The entity requires the national government to immediately pay salaries to public workers

The cancellation of salaries must include the fourteenth salary, which in the Sierra and Amazon regions must be paid during this month of August.

The DPE asked the judge to hear the lawsuit to declare the violation of the rights to work, with emphasis on the right to receive fair and equitable remuneration, equality and non-discrimination, dignity, quality of life, health, legal security, direct application of the Constitution of the Republic and international human rights instruments.

The Ombudsman’s Office argued that the constant delays in the payment of salaries to people who work in the public sector. This has had an impact on the development of their life projects and on the timely satisfaction of their basic needs, in the fulfillment of their obligations with other people and public and private legal entities.

According to the agency, this has resulted in many people who provide their services in public entities with impediments to hold public office. Despite the fact that said moratorium, indirectly, is forged by the State, a fact that generates a violation of the right to work and stability.

The Ombudsman’s Office warns that people work in public institutions who, due to their condition, belong to priority care groups, including people with disabilities, pregnant women, people with catastrophic illnesses, among others. Many of them do not have access to their periodic treatments, in the health centers granted by social security for non-payment to the Ecuadorian Institute of Social Security (IESS).

The DPE insists that, in view of the multiple complaints and complaints made in various instances, it has presented this jurisdictional guarantee.

The COVID-19 pandemic has revealed the economic mismanagement of the public treasury in Ecuador, which, in the opinion of the Ombudsman’s Office, should not fall or be faced by the country’s working class, the official statement said.
