SRI detects phantom companies that generate damage to the treasury

The companies billed more than 3 billion dollars.

In 2019, the Internal Revenue Service (SRI) identified 930 companies considered ghost or paper. These companies that are distributed, especially, in the provinces of Pichincha, Manabí, Guayas and El Oro billed, between 2016 and 2020, more than 3 billion dollars.

During the past year, the SRI raised $ 14 billion in taxes nationwide and despite the fact that the figure was higher than in 2018, the institution’s zone director, Gabriela Orellana, said it could be better. The reason is that the creation of the so-called ghost companies has caused damage to the treasury and has put the control agencies on alert.

“Their production process is non-existent, they are created or constituted in a fictional way. Obviously its purpose is tax evasion, ”said the official.

Orellana explained that these companies are created legally, but do not record real activities and use them to bill non-existent goods or services and even to launder money from illegal networks.

He also revealed that legal studies could be immersed in such activity.
