Around 220 thousand people take up teleworking in Ecuador

Employers who put their employers at risk will be penalized.

Until noon on Tuesday, March 17, the Ministry of Labor registered 224 thousand employees (public and private) who took advantage of the teleworking modality before the provisions issued by the Government, as a measure to deal with the coronavirus.

Minister Andrés Madero indicated that on Friday alone, 15,600 people registered under this modality to comply with the working day.

In relation to complaints from citizens who state that they are being forced by their employers to go to work, he noted that «no one can compel them» and that the rights of workers will be safeguarded.

He said that complaints can be made through electronic channels provided by the State Portfolio such as email denuncias@trabajo.gob.ec and warned that those who fail to comply with the measures imposed will be punished.

He clarified that as part of the actions taken by the Government, the face-to-face working day is suspended, with the exception of the production chains that supply the population with food, as well as the health sector, the media, among others arranged by the Executive Decree issued by President Lenín Moreno.

He argued that people who cannot paralyze their activities should be provided with the necessary hygiene conditions to carry out their tasks.

He stated that the labor inspectors are carrying out controls to ensure compliance with the actions established by the Government.

As part of that sweep, he said that even commercial establishments that failed to comply with the provisions have been closed.

«We are doing this on a national scale, we are going to be strict with the decree,» he exclaimed.
