COE authorizes return of Ecuadorians from abroad

The Foreign Ministry carries out the procedures, but first it is necessary to have availability of accommodation places for them to pass the quarantine.

Ecuador’s Emergency Operations Committee (COE) resolved to resume the return to the country of compatriots who are abroad and who, in the face of the coronavirus pandemic emergency, have been unable to do so.

Through a statement, the Foreign Ministry reported that after overcoming certain difficulties that led to ordering a temporary suspension, humanitarian aid was reactivated.

The return plan gave priority to people in vulnerable situations, such as children without their parents, older adults, pregnant women and people with disabilities.

The Foreign Ministry specified that 1,438 Ecuadorians have returned to the country on 17 flights. These people have been subjected to Mandatory Preventive Isolation (APO), that is, a quarantine of 14 days in places destined to comply with this measure.

The suspension of the flights that was ordered on March 30, was due to the fact that several compatriots failed to comply with the isolation provision.

After resuming the operation, the Foreign Ministry explained that the return of Ecuadorians depends on the operation of international flights and on the availability in Ecuador of hotels for quarantine.

In addition, the Foreign Ministry and diplomatic representations of the country seek mechanisms to enable the orderly and safe return of Ecuadorians, in order to prevent risks of contagion to the population.

The COE stated that prior to authorizing the return of passengers to the country, the places of accommodation must be secured to pass the quarantine.
