Mayor Cynthia Viteri pointed out that in order to stay at this stage, citizens must comply with the established security rules with responsibility.
After two months of being in social isolation due to the coronavirus pandemic, Guayaquil decided to switch to social distancing since this Wednesday, May 20.
The decision was made by the cantonal Emergency Operations Committee (COE), after an analysis based on the application of 1,600 rapid tests. These results determined that 32% of the population (about 900,000 Guayaquil residents) became infected with the disease.
According to figures from the Ministry of Public Health (MSP), the canton exceeds 9,100 confirmed cases of coronavirus. The figure is equivalent to about 70% of the cases reported in Guayas, which already exceeds 13,100.
In her Twitter account, Mayor Cynthia Viteri commented that this stage was reached after hard work and to stay in that stage «citizens must respect and responsibly comply with the established norms.»
The distancing stage implies the extension of departure times and a greater reactivation of the productive sectors. The curfew at this stage is from 21:00 to 05:00.
The Municipality of Guayaquil was the first entity to define service hours. Both the Cabildo and the municipal companies will operate from 10:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Users will be served according to the last digit of their ID: 0 and 1 on Mondays, 2 and 3 on Tuesdays, 4 and 5 on Wednesdays, 6 and 7 on Thursdays, 8 and 9 on Fridays.
Public institutions may work with a maximum of 50% of their staff. The cantonal COE recommended that they join the hours from 10:30 to 15:00.
For the private sector, the cantonal COE established a schedule from 10:00 to 19:00 and likewise, they can work with up to 50% of the staff, in person.
On the subject of urban transportation, the number of routes was reduced. Andrés Roche, manager of the Municipal Transit Authority (ATM), explained that the buses will run at 30% of their capacity.
