Siekopai nationality confirms coronavirus cases and asks for State attention

The indigenous leadership requests tests to detect the disease and the attention of the authorities.

The Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador (Conaie) reported that the first Siekopai teacher is in intensive care with symptoms associated with COVD-19.

In a statement, the Ministerial Agreement of the Development Council of the Nationalities and Peoples of Ecuador (Codenpe) was announced, highlighting the lack of evidence and humanitarian aid in the face of the pandemic.

Like the case of the master siekopai, it is noted that there are other patients with coronavirus and that it has been difficult for them to obtain the tests, despite the fact that they have opted for self-management and the use of ancestral plants to improve their state of health.

Justino Piaguague, president of the nationality, indicated that until May 19, the Ministry of Health confirmed that of 80 rapid tests carried out, 30 were positive for COVID-19. 7 samples with PCR are added to this group.

The indigenous leader also noted that a family would have symptoms associated with the virus.

For this nationality it is worrying that the authorities of the municipalities of Shushufindi and Cuyabeno have not yet maintained an approach with the community, nor have they been informed about the resources that will be allocated to attend to the emergency.

Piaguague questioned that they want to be held responsible for supposedly not having taken care of their health and recalled that, given the complaints they have made as a nationality, they have had several offers that have not been met.

He urged the State to fulfill its responsibility to preserve the life and health of the peoples.

He added that the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) and the Office of the Special Rapporteur on Economic, Social, Cultural and Environmental Rights (REDESCA) have urged the State to fulfill its responsibility.

Finally, the State was held responsible for a possible ethnocide of the Siekopai people if it is not addressed.
