Jorge Wated analyzes granting IESS hospitals to the private sector

The objective is for international companies «to be in charge of searching for the best profiles with administrative hospital experience, to run the country’s hospitals,» Wated said.

«I would risk concessioning a health center and see the results for a year,» said the President of the Board of Directors of the Ecuadorian Social Security Institute (IESS), Jorge Wated, on June 8, 2020.

In a radio interview on Radio Centro, the head of the IESS explained that the objective is to look for an international company, such as Deloitte or Ernst & Young, “so that they are in charge of searching for the best profiles with administrative hospital experience, to direct the hospitals of the country».

His announcement is part of investigations and reports of alleged acts of corruption in various IESS hospitals in the country.

Wated said that an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) represents IESS $ 50,000, while the private sector costs about $ 25,000. This idea, he acknowledged, would cause rejection in certain sectors.

On April 22, 2020, Paúl Granda resigned as head of the IESS and, in a letter, said:

«Certain leaders, jointly responsible for the institutional crisis of the IESS, have unleashed an intense campaign to discredit the structural reforms that we undertook, to promote the privatization and control of the financial resources of the members, an issue that has hurt the institution.»

On another matter, the president of the Board of Directors of the IESS also reported that 614 contracts were delivered to the Comptroller, who will be in charge of reviewing and auditing to determine if there are irregularities in these processes.
