132 people deprived of liberty tested positive for Covid-19 at the Santo Domingo prison

There are 1,800 detainees and 314 were valued.

132 people deprived of liberty at the Bellavista Social Rehabilitation Center, in Santo Domingo, were positive for Covid-19.

This group of society was included in the sampling process that is applied to the population.

The brigades of the Ministry of Public Health evaluated 314 detainees out of a total of 1,800 who remain in this rehabilitation center.

90 penitentiary guides and 30 administrative officials also work here.

The detection of the first positive cases worries the authorities, but they clarify that it is still not possible to speak of massive infections.

Pércides Quiñónez, delegate of the Ministry of Health, stated that in the prison the quarantine has been complied with in accordance with the recommendations for these cases and that family visits have not been allowed since last March 16, 2020.

She added that isolation protocols have been implemented in the wards. But, despite these actions, there was the case of a prisoner who was in the maximum security pavilion, whose health condition worsened in recent weeks, according to his lawyer Rómulo Andrade.

Andrade said that he requested the transfer of his defendant to a health home, but did not have an adequate response until the case reached court. Only with that request did she manage to transfer her client to a local hospital, where she remains in critical condition.

Meanwhile, the rest of the detainees who tested positive for coronavirus will be reassessed with the PCR tests.
