Pichincha records 1,150 deaths from COVID-19 and from other causes only in June. In the same period in 2019 there were 552 deaths.
In other words, this year there were 598 deaths above the previous year’s average. The increase in deaths is evident from May, June and July significantly.
According to the general director of the Civil Registry, Vicente Taiano, there is an increase from 40% to 45% in Pichincha. Most are registered in Quito, the official said in an interview on television. So far in July, 1,150 deaths in the province, of which 1,051 are in Quito.
In June 2019 there were 1,105 deaths from different causes, while June 2020 there are 1,803; in other words, 698 more deaths in that month alone. In May 2019 there were 1,074 deaths, while in May this year 1,577 were reported, that is, there are 503 excess deaths.
In total, from January to June 2019 Pichincha had 6,501 deaths, while June 2020 the number of deaths reached 8,124.
Pichincha is the most affected province with the highest number of daily infected persons nationwide, with peaks of 300 daily cases.
On July 1, 711 cases were confirmed, this was the day with the highest number of reported infections.
On the other hand, Guayas, the province hardest hit by the pandemic, had nearly 12,000 deaths in April alone. However, in these months, death figures returned to their average before the pandemic, which was between 1,800 and 2,000 deaths.
The province of Azuay remains in the pre-pandemic parameters with 181 deaths in these first 15 days, the majority in Cuenca. The average was 320-350 per month. «Today with these 181 deaths in the first days there is still no alarming increase,» he said.
