They claim the insufficient government response to the pandemic and the economic crisis
Students and workers fired during the health emergency gathered in Parque El Arbolito, in Quito, to protest against budget cuts to education and the government’s lack of response to create jobs.
«October will be back,» says one of the banners leading the mobilization, which began the tour of the streets of the city.
The protesters wear masks and try to walk while respecting the two-meter insulation to protect themselves in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.
They also claim the lack of attention to popular sectors of Quito, the closure of Guagua Centros and the abuses against informal workers.
«Yunda, not at the closing of the bus, no more persecution of the ambulant,» says another of the posters.
In addition, there are banners rejecting the negotiations that the country reached with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and criticize that «the country has a neoliberal government.»
The Union of Affected by Banking also participated in the protest to demand laws and measures so that banks grant payment facilities for those who have debts and who, due to the layoffs, do not have to fulfill their obligations.
«Without work there is no food,» they exclaim.
Cuts to education is another reason for the protest.
«Only the organization will stop the profit of education,» says the banner carried by one of the protesters, who criticized that, in the midst of the pandemic, the Government has cut resources for universities and polytechnic schools.
As the mobilization progresses, a group from the National Anti-Riot Police intervened in the protest to disperse the peaceful march that reached the height of the Central Bank of Ecuador (BCE).
