The Minister of Health, Juan Carlos Zevallos, acknowledged that starting face-to-face classes «the risk of contagion is greater», but said that they made this decision based on successful experiences in other countries where there were no more infections with the return to classes.
The national Emergency Operations Committee (COE) resolved to approve a pilot plan for which the return to classes is face-to-face with several specific parameters.
In a statement to the media, Zevallos said that the risk will exist, but pointed out that it is not only a health emergency, but also a social and economic one.
“Is the risk going to increase, yes, but is it riskier to stay home for the next few months? That is the question that must be asked ”, said the minister.
The COE approved the pilot plan for the voluntary return to classrooms at the Colegio Alemán Humboldt Guayaquil on September 1. Zevallos said that they chose this institution because in Germany, once face-to-face classes were resumed, there have been no more infections.
«We are doing it based on evidence and successful experiences in other countries,» added the Minister of State.
On the other hand, the Mayor of the city, Cynthia Viteri, said that «the 2020-2021 school year in the city continues and will continue under the online modality in schools and colleges, private and fiscal.» Viteri pointed out that she will not risk the youth and children of Guayaquil.
