Latin America relaxes restrictions and increases cases of Covid-19

(Prensa Latina) In the last six weeks, deaths from COVID-19 in America have more than doubled, and countries seem to be going in the opposite direction to what the data shows, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) said today.

PAHO Director Carissa Etienne reported that the region already reaches more than 12.5 million cases and almost 450 thousand deaths, with the United States, Brazil, Colombia, Peru, Argentina and Mexico among the 10 countries with the highest number of contagions worldwide.

In her opinion, the trend in the data indicates an urgent need to implement public health measures to curb the spread of Covid-19, such as social distancing, however, she pointed out, the opposite has happened.

Etienne meant that countries have gradually relaxed restrictions, resumed trade, and some are preparing to go back to school, so there appears to be a disconnect between the policies implemented and the picture with upward epidemiological curves.

‘This is not a good sign. Wishing the virus would disappear will not work, it will only lead to more cases, » said the PAHO director.

In fact, local health authorities have a central role in the generation and analysis of data to adjust public health measures to the reality of each area, he specified.

Likewise, she expressed concern about the disproportionate number of young people with the lethal disease, a pattern that is similar throughout the Americas: the vast majority of reported cases are in people between 20 and 59 years old.
