The Cuban Foreign Minister emphasizes the need to maintain peace in Latin America to address the US efforts to impose its Monroe Doctrine in the region.

In a message published this Monday on his Twitter account, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Cuba, Bruno Rodríguez, recalled the Proclamation of Latin America and the Caribbean as a Zone of Peace, signed in January 2014 by the governments of the region, in which they undertake to resolve their differences peacefully in order to uproot the use of force in the area.

The document, said the Cuban Foreign Minister, is based mainly on «observing the principles of national sovereignty, equal rights and self-determination of the peoples.»

Rodríguez has also called on the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean to «respect our commitments» as the only way to confront the plans of the United States Government, chaired by Donald Trump, based on the so-called Monroe Doctrine.

The head of Cuban Diplomacy refers to the doctrine of US President James Monroe, raised in 1823, to confront European colonialism in the American continent, which is summarized in one sentence: «America for the Americans»; However, later, Washington used it to justify its intervention in the countries of the region.

In accordance with the aforementioned proclamation of peace, the States ratify their responsibility not to intervene, directly or indirectly, in the internal affairs of others, and undertake to foster friendly and cooperative relations, regardless of the differences between their political and economic systems. and social or their levels of development.

However, several Latin American countries are the target of hostile US measures, including Cuba, which faces a series of economic sanctions, which do not allow the island to develop its potential.

Hostility towards Havana multiplied after Trump’s arrival at the White House in 2017 and worsened since the beginning of the new coronavirus pandemic, which causes COVID-19, hindering access to medicines and equipment necessary to cope with this health crisis.
