53 massacres have been reported in 2020 in Colombia
Dozens of people set up a humanitarian camp in front of one of the headquarters of the International Red Cross in Bogotá, demanding that this organization enable official channels of communication with the National Government in the face of the crisis of violence and humanitarian that the South American country is experiencing.
The protesters, who this Monday created what they call «Humanitarian Camp for Life», demand, among other things, compliance with existing provisions in the legal system, the implementation of programs and the operation of mechanisms aimed at offering democratic guarantees and peace in the territories.
This new protest action, which continues indefinitely, began on the same day that a new massacre was registered in the Department of Antioquia, specifically in the municipality of Zaragoza, in the Bajo Cauca Region. With this, there are 13 massacres registered, only in Antioquia, during 2020.
The new violent act took place when armed men, whose identity has not been defined, opened fire on a public establishment in Zaragoza, causing the death of five people.
The same day another massacre took place in the Simití municipality, Bolívar Department, where three people were killed at the hands of unknown perpetrators.
Also on Monday the authorities reported on two other massacres that occurred in recent days; one in the municipality of Aguachica, Department of César; and another in the Carmen municipality, Department of Bolívar.
At least 14 people have died in these recent acts of violence, carried out by irregular armed groups that dispute control of illicit markets in Colombia.
The Institute of Studies for Development and Peace (Indepaz) counts 53 massacres so far this year in Colombia. Until August 17 of this year, the United Nations (UN) had documented 33 massacres in the country, against 36 in 2019, 29 in 2018 and 11 in 2017.
