Informal sales and crowds intensify in the Historic Center of Quito

The authorities are working on relocation plans for merchants.

In the Historic Center of Quito, there are problems related to informal commerce, people who live on the streets, citizens who engage in alcohol consumption, as well as problems related to clandestine hotels and sex workers.

Control operations are carried out daily in this sector of the Capital; however, the residents of the sector consider that a comprehensive measure for the entire area is lacking. The leaders estimate that in the context of Covid-19, insecurity problems increased throughout the Historic Center.

The neighborhoods and streets of this parish are going through different problems, in some sectors informal sex work abounds, in others they buy and sell stolen things, while informal commerce has been increasing.

The Municipality of Quito reported that control and security operations increased and there is collaboration with the Inclusion Secretariat to offer help to alcoholics and homeless people.

From August 31 to September 6, more than 80 operations were carried out in this area, the most encountered problems were informal sales and crowds. Cesar Díaz, secretary of security, reported that from this week the control agents will begin with the fines and remove the merchandise from the street shops.

The city authorities commented that they are working on a relocation plan for informal vendors, hence, the May 1 Association will reach an agreement for 250 autonomous merchants to work on the San Roque platform.
