Carriers report assaults while transporting food in quarantine

The union requests more attention from the security forces so that these robberies are not repeated

The National Federation of Heavy Transport of Ecuador (Fenatrape) addressed an official letter to the Minister of Transport and Public Works, Gabriel Martínez, to alert that the vehicles that transport essential products have been assaulted and their drivers attacked on various roads in the country.

These incidents would be registered primarily on the Quevedo – El Empalme route, within the logistics corridors enabled for the transportation of essential supplies.

«The routes through which heavy-duty vehicles circulate in the logistics corridors have suffered assaults and robberies of their units, merchandise, and assaults on the drivers of the units and their personal effects, especially on the Quevedo-El Splice «, they specified in a statement.

As reported by Fenatrape, currently 25,000 vehicles of this type carry food, medicine and cleaning utensils daily throughout the country. Of that amount, 9,000 work in Quito, the same number in Guayaquil and the rest in other provinces.

The head of this union, Luis Vizcaíno, requested more attention from the public force to prevent these thefts from recurring and the products reaching their destination.

«For the foregoing, I request that the security reinforcement be coordinated with the public force, especially in tolls, speed breaks, or sites reported as high risk for assaults.»

On the other hand, he denounced that approximately 30 assaults on trucks occur every week in the country. «We are victims of crime because we are beginning to feel a social crisis in the country.»
