April 17 UNASUR day

The National Assembly of Ecuador declared the “Day of the Union of South American Nations” (UNASUR) on April 17, 2014.

Six years ago, the document that encourages the celebration of South American identity and the common history of the region was included in the calendar of official celebrations of the Republic of Ecuador.

The Union of South American Nations was created in 2011, promoted by former Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez, to strengthen political dialogue between member states, promote social and human development among nations.

However, Unasur has suffered a series of attacks by the United States and some right-wing governments in the region, which has meant a weakening in the regional political forum.

Since 2018, the right-wing governments that came to power in Brazil, Bolivia, Colombia, Argentina, Chile, Ecuador, Paraguay, Uruguay and Peru questioned the forum of unity and integration and suspended their participation in the regional organization.

Although the victory of the left-wing Alberto Fernández over the right-wing Mauricio Macri reversed the decision that Argentina had made.
